First of all, the saints appreciate the prayers of the Lord’s people and their thoughts toward us at this time. It gives comfort and encouragement. Please continue to pray

(Eph. 3:14-21)

Communication with parts of the country affected is being restored, and a clearer picture is emerging. In the center-north of the country, mainly around Moron and Puerto Cabello, many houses collapsed, many more were damaged, but few lives were lost. The Lord’s care for His own was evident in that only 6 believers lost their homes and belongings; others suffered damage to their houses, but only one sister passed away. A few Gospel Halls have minor damage, and several believers have had to move out of apartment buildings due to structural damage.

There has been widespread destruction in La Guaira, a port city 25km from Caracas, the capital. Over 45 high-rise buildings collapsed, and there is unofficial information that almost 50.000 people are missing. The lack of government rescue coordination and communication has meant that most rescues have been carried out by people who have gone to help, without suitable tools or machinery.

There is a small assembly there, and most of the believer’s houses have suffered damage. It has been confirmed today that one sister and two of her children died when their apartment building collapsed, her 11-year-old boy was pulled from the rubble alive yesterday afternoon by a rescue team and brethren who went to help. Her husband survived as he is a sailor and was at sea. A number of brethren from Caracas and other places are there, searching for survivors.

The Lord has preserved His people through this tragedy and has enabled the saints to help their fellow believers in need, but many unsaved people have suffered material loss. A few believers have relatives in La Guaira who are still missing. Rescue teams and equipment from other countries began arriving yesterday afternoon. Prayer is requested that many survivors will be found in time and that there will be a seeking after God as a result of these sad events. Written by Samuel Ussher
