Visit to Southern Ireland

Harry & Jean Reid

Recently we had a very profitable and encouraging visit to the South of Ireland and were able to visit Gort, Roscommon and Athleague. As on previous occasions, we were very well received by the dear Brazilian people in each of these towns. It seems that the greatest concentration of the Brazilians is in the town of Gort (half-an-hour’s drive south of Galway) where we spent most of our time going around the housing schemes, from door-to-door with the tracts, Gospel CDs and calendars, all in the Portuguese language. Out of the thousands of items distributed, up to the present we have not had one refusal, and do praise the Lord for this. The people were so friendy and some, even on our first contact, invited us into their homes for coffee.

Sadly the economic situation in the south has meant that some of the Brazilian people who found it difficult to get work, have returned to their homeland. Yet to our amazement and delight there is still a number coming to Ireland. Evidently this door is remaining open for the spread of the gospel for the foreseeable future.

Roscommon is some seventy miles N.E. of Gort and Athleague is located about fifteen miles west of Roscommon. In Athleague there is a huge abattoir called Kepak where almost a million animals are slaughtered each year. Some seventy Brazilian men work in the slaughterhouse and, as on other visits, they were happy to receive the gospels in their mother tongue.

We certainly would value the prayer fellowship of the dear saints that they would join with us before the Throne, that the ‘good seed’ of God’s Word will bear fruit to the eternal blessing of many dear Brazilian people and for the glory of our Lord Jesus.

As we enter the New Year our thoughts are now turning to arranging another visit to Brazil and so would very much value the prayers of the saints, that our proposed visit might be profitable to the believers in the Manaus, Bom Jesus and Santarem regions. We wish to convey our united thanks for all your continued kindness, interest and prayers.
